Whispering Pines, NC
As a grant from the king in 1769, Nicholas Smith built a mill on the lake to grind corn. The mill was used during the American Revolution for rations. Later in 1865, William Thagard built a new mill. The Lake was named after William. More changes arrived in the early 20th century with a concrete dame being built by I.G Chandler with a power plant that was in operations until the late 1920’s. By the late 1950’s, AB Hardee purchased the lake as well as an additional 445 acres. He developed a golf course and a residential community. Today it has grown to over 3000 acres, eight lakes and three semi private golf courses. Whispering Pines was incorporated in 1969 and is within ten minutes of Southern Pines and Pinehurst.
